TOSHIBA DESIGN WIN CATAPULTS SILICON IMAGE INTO NOTEBOOK PC MARKET
PanelLink® SiI 168 Transmitter Provides DVI Output For Tecra 9000 Series Notebooks
SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 12, 2001—Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIMG), a leader in high-bandwidth semiconductor
and system solutions for mass markets, today announced that Toshiba America Information Systems (Irvine, Calif.) has
incorporated the PanelLink® SiI™ 168™ Digital Visual Interface (DVI) transmitter into its new Tecra®
9000 Series notebooks. When used with their companion docking stations, the Tecra 9000 Series notebooks provide a seamless
digital connection with DVI-compatible displays, including projectors and flat panel displays.
"We are thrilled that Toshiba, who started the year as the leader in notebook PC shipments, has chosen the SiI 168
transmitter to enable DVI in their Tecra 9000 notebooks," noted Parviz Khodi, vice president of marketing for Silicon Image.
"This is a significant milestone for both DVI and Silicon Image. Due to the proliferation of digital displays, manufacturers
now have a compelling reason to offer DVI-enabled notebooks and PCs capable of maintaining an all-digital connection to the
display. As our first DVI design win for the notebook market, this represents a significant breakthrough and future market
opportunity. DVI is going mainstream, and we expect notebook and PC manufacturers to follow Toshiba's lead by enabling DVI
on their host devices. As the industry leader in DVI transmitters, Silicon Image is well positioned to benefit from this trend."
"Our new Tecra 9000 Series of notebook computers provide the ultimate in power and performance," noted Oscar Koenders,
vice president, product marketing and worldwide product planning at Toshiba America Information Systems. "When designing
these advanced systems, it was important that we offer DVI capability for the best possible image quality. Silicon Image
was the logical choice to supply our DVI transmitters due to their proven track record of quality, reliability and excellent
customer service. In addition, the SiI 168 features High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which we plan to enable
at a later date."
The SiI 168 transmitter incorporates HDCP, enabling the protected transmission of uncompressed, high-definition content through the fastest digital video I/O available. Its highly flexible graphics interface can be configured for either 12-bit or 24-bit mode for true color support. The SiI 168 is pin-compatible with Silicon Image's popular SiI 164, supporting non-HDCP applications as well.
